For the last few days I had been thinking a lot about politics, especially taking into account the latest development in Ukraine. Is democracy a bit overrated or it is still the best and only way to solve political problems in 21st century?
The recent events in Donetsk (Eastern Ukraine), where a pro-Russian mob has seized the the regional government building and declared the independence from Ukraine, in general is rather democratic action. So, again – in general – must be welcomed by every democratic nation.
But if we look behind the current events? Why there is such a large pro-Russian population in Eastern Ukraine? Have you ever looked in Ukraine’s history? When everybody is well aware of term Holocaust, not many know about Golodomor ("Killing by Starvation"). In 1932 and 1933 Stalin experimented with this technique, starving to death about 4-7 million Ukrainians. Since 2006, the Golodomor has been recognized as a genocide of the Ukrainian people.
Why it’s worth mentioning now, watching news? Simply because after the Golodomor the deserted territories were filled by Russians which was the initial plan by Stalin.
So my question is – can we accept the democratic rights of Russians currently living in Ukraine if their presence there is a result of a genocide? Where to draw a line? Is it even possible?
